Apps for the blind and visually impaired

Renee Youngberg, Vision Loss Resources Ipad guru, shares an app for people who are blind or have low vision.

VIA, Visually Impaired Apps, created by the Braille Institute, is one of the only applications that is supported by voice over or zoom and is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch as well.

VIA has great search results.  For instance, if you search for an app in Apple’s Apps Store and use the word “blind” or “low vision” you may not find what you are looking for as the search term must appear in the title or name of the app.  So if you put “bar code reader” in the Apps Store search bar, you would not get the ones that are supported by voiceover or zoom. That’s not the case with VIA.

When you download VIA from the Apps Store, you will also get an app recommender, which is a resource that lists the current apps that are available.  VIA is a great place to start your search before checking out the Apps Store or other resources.  Do check out the reviews before you decide to pay for an app.
