Vision Loss Resources offers monthly recreational, educational, and social activities that are fully accessible to people with vision impairment. From a private tour of a museum, to dinner club at a favorite restaurant; from card games and book clubs to yoga, knitting, and pottery, we are interested in just about everything!

6/24 (M): High Tea

1:30-3:00. In SP. Cost: $3.00
This is for men and women. We will experience a Vision Loss Resources version of a High Tea. Join us for a fun afternoon sipping a variety of teas, caffeinated and herbals, as well as other beverage choices. We’ll enjoy some special “high tea-style” foods, including little sandwiches and desserts. If you feel whimsical, wear a summer hat. Plan your rides for 3:00 to 3:10 pm. Space is limited.

6/25 (T): Adv. Tech: Android Phone

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $10.00
We will be learning all about what the Android phone can do. Please bring headphones or earbuds to class.

6/26 (W): 3Fs: Fabric, Fiber, and Friends

1:00-3:30. In MPLS. No charge.
Do you enjoy knitting, crocheting, quilting, or creative hobbies? Then come in and bring your own project to work on as you enjoy the company of others. We donate many of our handmade items to local charities!

6/27 (TH): Cards-500

10:00-12:00. In MPLS. Cost: $1.00
Enjoy some coffee and cards.

6/27 (TH): Gardening and Goodies

1:00-2:00. In SP. Cost: $1.00
Want to learn more about gardening? If so, join us for Gardening and Goodies. We will prep the garden area for the upcoming season. Snacks and gardening equipment are provided. If you have your own gardening supplies, please bring them. Come enjoy the outdoors and get your green thumb on! Space is limited.

6/28 (F): Pottery

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $5.00
Join us as we work on hand-built clay projects. Come make plates, cups, or create whatever comes to the imagination. No experience necessary. Space is limited.

July Events:

7/1 (M): Games Extravaganza

10:00-12:00. In MPLS. Cost: $1.00

Come for lively fun with board and trivia games. We’ll have time for games, laughter, conversation, and a light snack.

Please Note: There will be no 3Fs meeting on 7/3 and no 500 Cards on 7/4 due to the holiday.

7/8 (M): Walking Group

9:00-11:30. No charge.

Come join your friends as we walk for an hour, break for coffee and conversation, then walk for another hour at your own pace, paired with your own volunteer. It’s a fun, easy way to get up and moving! Space is limited.

7/9 (T): Tech 101: Smartphone Camera

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $10.00

Join us at this class where we will be working with the cameras on our smartphones. Please bring headphones or earbuds with you to class.

7/9 (T): Movie Matinee: 42

12:30-2:50. In MPLS. Cost: $1.00

Join us for a fun movie matinee, with popcorn. We will be playing the audio described movie 42 (PG-13). We are right in the middle of a very interesting baseball season, so this movie seems fitting. 42 is a film about baseball legend, Jackie Robinson. The story is based in the 1940’s and 1950’s. Jackie is a major star in the Negro Baseball league. Branch Rickey is a Major League baseball executive who decides to recruit Jackie as the first modern African American Major League Baseball player. This is an enormous challenge for Jackie and his wife, who experience racial hostility both on and off the field. The movie stars Chadwick Boseman, Harrison Ford, Nicole Behane, and Christopher Meloni. Please schedule pick-up rides for 2:50 pm.

7/11 (TH): Cards-500

Please note the move to the second Thursday due to the holiday. Enjoy some coffee and cards. This group also meets on the 25th.

7/11 (TH): Gardening and Goodies

1:00-2:00. In SP. Cost: $1.00

Are you interested in learning more about gardening? If so, come join us for Gardening and Goodies. We will have snacks, plants, and good conversation. At the first meeting this month, in addition to tending our garden, we will also have a volunteer from the Minnesota Master Gardeners. They will talk with us and answer any questions you may have about gardening. We will provide snacks and equipment. Feel free to bring your own gardening supplies as well. We hope to see you there! Space is limited. This group also meets on the 25th.

7/13 (SA): Touchable Art Fair

12:00-3:00. No charge.

Vision Loss Resources is partnering with the Red-Hot Art Festival to provide the first “Touchable Art Fair”. Volunteers will be available to provide sighted guide and greater access to the fair for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Come and enjoy over 200 artists, food trucks, hands-on artmaking, and more at this free event in Stevens Square Park. Plan pick-up rides no later than 3:15pm.

7/16 (T): Adv. Tech: Music Streaming

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $10.00

We will be learning all about music streaming services and how to make playlists. Please bring headphones/earbuds.

7/18 (TH): Calendar

Join the many helping hands that work together assembling the Community Center Calendar mailing. Treats served.

7/18 (TH): Science Museum of Minnesota

1:00-3:45. Cost: $5.00

We’re feeling hopeful that scheduling this activity for the summer, means it will be successful! This is one of our best state museums. Join us for an afternoon of exploring the Science Museum of Minnesota with help from our volunteers. The documentary film showing during our time is Cuba, which starts at 2pm. The film runs for 45 minutes to 1 hour. AD devices are available for the film. If you choose to go to the Omni Theatre when we visit, please let us know when you RSVP. Plan your pick-up rides for 3:45 pm. Space is limited. Please note: To attend this you need to RSVP and prepay by Friday, July 5th. For more information on prepaid events look at the Refund Policy in the Community Center Policies section below.

7/19 (F): Flexibility Class

11:15-12:15. In SP. Cost: $5.00

For July only, we will be meeting on the third and fourth Fridays. Improve your flexibility and stability with gentle muscular stretches and myofascial self-release. Join us twice a month and learn exercises that you can practice at home. Range of motion, stabilizing, and muscle firming exercises will be practiced. Floor work is not required but highly encouraged. Bring a fitness mat, a rolling pin, and a tennis ball to receive the most beneficial workout. Space is limited. We’ll meet on the 26th during pottery so, you’ll need to choose if you want to attend an hour of pottery and flexibility or if you want to attend one class or the other.

7/19 (F): Balance Class

1:00-2:00. In SP. Cost: $5.00

Strength, balance, and physical endurance are sure to improve with this class. Each class will consist of strength training, cardiovascular and balance exercises all designed for the unique needs of seniors. Interested in preventing falls, building strength and improving flexibility, then come and see if it is a good fit for you. Our trainer, Angela, can change-up the exercises to individual needs, and important, she keeps it fun! Space is limited.

7/23 (T): Tech 101: Using Siri

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $10.00

At this class we will learn how to use Siri on our Apple devices. Please bring headphones or earbuds to class.

7/23 (T): Lunch Bunch: Joseph’s Grill

11:30-1:30.

Joseph’s Grill is a favorite restaurant of VLR folks. They have been in business for over 30 years, offering a full bar and a varied and delicious menu. This includes appetizers such as street tacos, sandwiches, burgers, salads, and what they call “Comfort Zone” foods, such as a hot turkey plate. Due to the size of our group, gratuity is automatically added to each bill. Please plan your rides for 1:30pm. Space is limited. Online menu at: http://josephsgrill.com

7/26 (F): Pottery

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $5.00

7/29 (M): Ride on the Padelford River Boat

11:30-2:00. Cost: $10.00

Come and enjoy an afternoon on the Mighty Mississippi River. This is a 90-minute narrated excursion that departs from Harriet Island. The sights will include the St. Paul High Bridge, Pig’s Eye Cave, the mouth of the Minnesota River, and Pike Island. There is a full bar on board and snacks such as hot dogs and popcorn. No outside food or beverages allowed. We will have one on one volunteers available to help you navigate the river boat and add to the river boat’s narration. Please arrange your pick-up rides for 2 pm. Space is limited. Please note: This is a prepay event. To attend it you need to RSVP and pay by Friday, July 19th. 7/30 (T): Speak Your Mind

10:00-11:00. In MPLS. No charge.

The Metropolitan Council wants to have a conversation with you! Come and learn about the ADA Self-Evaluation Project and give your feedback. They want to learn about what is important to you. The first 15 people to register will receive a $15 gift card. Beverages and snacks will be provided. Come to learn and share your thoughts!

7/30 (T): Adv. Tech: Exercise Apps

10:00-12:00. In SP. Cost: $10.00

We will be learning how to exercise using apps and the apple watch. Please bring headphones or earbuds to class.

COMING ATTRACTIONS AT VLR:

Upcoming Twins Game

We have Twins tickets for August 7th, but early RSVPs are not accepted. We want to inform you that preference will go to those that were on the waitlist in May, if they RSVP. Then the tickets are on a first RSVP first serve basis.

Please be aware, due to the Twins game, Supper Club in August will shift to Wednesday, August 28th. The details will be in the August calendar.

Low Vision Support Groups

VLR offers numerous low vision support groups in the Twin Cities for individuals to meet for support, comradery, and information. Want to get connected? Contact us at 651-224-7662. You may be asked to complete a free in-home assessment before attending so we can get to know you and match you to the right group!

Online Low Vision Support Group

VLR has started an online support group for people with vision loss. If you are interested in being connected please email Sarah Mayberry at sarahm@vlrw.org or Renee Waclaw at rwaclaw@vlrw.org.

Independent Living Skills Courses

Need some help learning how to manage your vision loss? Take our 4-week Independent Living Skills course, which covers the Emotional Impact of Vision Loss, Orientation and Mobility, Technology and Communication, Organization & Labeling, Writing, Ways to Enhance Remaining Vision, Food Prep Techniques, and Money Management. Lunch is provided.

July Dates: Thursdays, July 11th, 18th, and 25th from 10am to 3pm at our St. Paul location.

EVENTS IN THE COMMUNITY:

Touchable Art Fair at Red Hot Art Festival

Save the date for Saturday, July 13th from 12pm – 3 pm for Stevens Square Park where Vision Loss Resources is partnering with the Red-Hot Art Festival to provide the first “Touchable Art Fair”. Volunteers will be available to provide sighted guide and greater access to the fair for individuals who are blind or have low vision. Come and enjoy over 200 artists, food trucks, hands-on artmaking, and more at this free event in Stevens Square Park. A celebration of the DIY heart and soul of Minneapolis culture. Footloose with Audio Description

Want to see an AD performance of Footloose? Then, go to Bloomington Center for the Arts/Theatre group (1800 W Old Shakopee Rd, Bloomington, MN 55431) on Sunday, August 11th at 2pm. It’s $46 for general admission, or $41 if you’re a Senior. Call 952-563-8575 to order tickets.

An Original Variety Show: Hot Dog Daze

Who: Interact Center for the Visual and Performing Arts

Where: The Lab Theater in downtown Minneapolis

Mary Poppins with Audio Description

See the Cross-Country Community Players at Maple Grover Senior High on July 27th at 2pm present Mary Poppins with Laurie Pape Hadley’s audio description. Tickets prices are $18 for Adults, $16 for ages 65+, and $14 for Students. There is a 50% discount for up to 2 tickets to those with a disability that need to use the AD service. Order Tickets online at: www.crossplayers.org (let them know if you have special seating needs).

COMMUNITY CENTER POLICIES:

RSVP and Cancellation Policy: You must RSVP for all activities. We ask that you RSVP at least 3 working days prior to event to ensure that we have enough registered participants, supplies, and volunteers. Registrants will be notified when classes are canceled due to low enrollment or weather conditions.

No Early RSVPs: RSVPs that are submitted before 7 AM on the listed date they begin will not be accepted. If you want to attend any events you must submit your RSVP through the RSVP hotline or RSVP email.

VLR Hours: Please schedule your Metro pickups as close to the activity end time as possible. VLR’s hours are 8:00am-4:30pm Monday-Friday (except when there are evening classes and activities). Please schedule your pick-ups before the building closes. Thank you!

No-Show Policy: For activities identified as “Space is limited”, if you accumulate three no-shows in six months, you will be unable to sign-up for activities for one month. Our intention is to continue to make our activities available to everyone who wishes to attend, so please make sure to cancel if you are unable to join us for any reason.

Severe Weather Days: Please call the VLR Weather Hotline at 612-284-8107 to see if VLR offices and activities are open for that day. The hotline will be updated by 6:00 AM if VLR is closing for severe weather. Participants who have RSVP’d for a class will also be notified.

Refund Policy: All events that need to be pre-paid are marked on the calendar. To hold your spot for these events, we must receive your money. If you need to cancel when a ticket is purchased in advance, you will be charged for the ticket unless someone on the waiting list can take your place. If you need to cancel, please call the RSVP line at 612-843-3439 or email rsvp@vlrw.org.

Scholarships: No one is denied participation due to inability to pay. Full and partial scholarships are available. Please leave your scholarship request on the RSVP line.

Visitor Sign-in: Please sign in and sign out at the front desk in MPLS.
