SUMMARY:Readers Choice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:There are two books this month\, both by local authors. \nHighway 61 traces approximately 440 miles through Minnesota\, from Pigeon Falls at the Canadian border south to La Crescent. Along the way\, the road hugs the North Shore\, zips through St. Paul\, and navigates bluffs along the Mississippi River. Cathy Wurzer unearths stories about these places and more as she travels down the road and into the past\, spotlighting famous and fascinating locations\, many of them little remembered today. Learn about bootleggers crossing the St. Croix by ferry or importing hooch from Canada onboard vessels designed in White Bear Lake. \nTales of the Road: Highway 61 by Cathy Wurzer (DBC24757) \nAND \nIn 1930 two novice paddlers—Eric Sevareid and Walter C. Port—launched a secondhand 18-foot canvas canoe into the Minnesota River at Fort Snelling for an ambitious summer-long journey from Minneapolis to Hudson Bay. Without benefit of radio\, motor\, or good maps\, the teenagers made their way over 2\,250 miles of rivers\, lakes\, and difficult portages. Nearly four months later\, after shooting hundreds of sets of rapids and surviving exceedingly bad conditions and even worse advice\, the ragged\, hungry adventurers arrived in York Factory on Hudson Bay—with winter freeze-up on their heels. First published in 1935\, Canoeing with the Cree is Sevareid’s classic account of this youthful odyssey. \nCanoeing with the Cree by Eric Sevareid (DBC10009) \nEnjoy reading and come prepared to discuss in October! \nHeld virtually by calling number 612-843-2594 and by entering ID 79521565#. Use the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library Catalog to order or download the book with your BARD account.

SUMMARY:Readers Choice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Canada\, 1898. The Gold Rush is on in the frozen wilderness of the Yukon. Fortunes are made as quickly as they’re lost\, and Dawson City has become a lawless settlement.\nIn its midst\, three women are trying to find their place on the edge of civilization. Journalist Kate\, along with her dog Yukon\, has travelled hundreds of miles after receiving a letter from her sister warning that her husband means to kill her. Martha’s hotel and livelihood are under threat from the local strongman\, who is set on buying up the town. And down by the river\, where gold shimmers from between the rocks\, Ellen feels her future slip away as her husband fails to find the fortune they risked so much to seek.\nWhen a woman is found murdered\, Kate\, Martha and Ellen find their lives\, fates and fortunes intertwined. But to unmask her killer\, they must navigate a desperate land run by dangerous men who will do anything for a glimpse of gold… \nThe Rush by Beth Lewis (DB137079) \nEnjoy reading and come prepared to discuss in September! \nHeld virtually by calling number 612-843-2594 and by entering ID 79521565#. SUMMARY:Readers Choice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Independent filmmaker Mary Haverstick thought she’d stumbled onto the project of a lifetime—a biopic of aviation pioneer Jerrie Cobb\, the key figure in a group of extraordinary women who in 1960 passed the same tests as the legendary male astronauts of the Mercury 7 but never went to space. Just as casting was set to begin\, Haverstick received a mysterious warning from a government agent; soon she began to suspect that there was more to Jerrie’s story than what met the eye. As she dug deeper\, she discovered that Jerrie’s life shadowed that of a mysterious CIA agent named June Cobb\, whose espionage career traced an arc of intrigue from the jungles of South America to Fidel Castro’s Cuba\, to the communist literary circles in Mexico City—and ultimately into the dark heart of the Kennedy assassination in Dallas. \nA Woman I Know by Mary Haverstick(DB135888) \nEnjoy reading and come prepared to discuss in August! \nHeld virtually by calling number 612-843-2594 and by entering ID 79521565#. Use the Minnesota Braille and Talking Book Library Catalog to order or download the book with your BARD account.

SUMMARY:Readers Choice Book Club
DESCRIPTION:Maine\, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes\, entombing a man in the ice\, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer\, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death\, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier\, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion\, declaring the death to be an accident\, Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. \nThe Frozen River by Ariel Lawhon (DB117781) \nEnjoy reading and come prepared to discuss in July! \nHeld virtually by calling number 612-843-2594 and by entering ID 79521565#.
