We enjoyed hosting the Minneapolis Downtown Next Generation Lions Club on October 16. Over lunch, the club learned about the various services Vision Loss Resources offers. Renee Youngberg, community services specialist, spoke about the community center activities, and Volunteer Coordinator Joe McKinley explained how the volunteer services works. DeafBlind Services MN, a subsidiary of Vision Loss Resources, had three speakers-Kimberly Williams, Paul Deeming and John Filek-talk about their services for deafblind adults and children. Kate Grathwol, president and CEO, gave an overview on vision loss and provided a tour of the facilities.
Since the Next Generation Lions was chartered in 2009, it has raised over $500 for Vision Loss Resources. The small, but determined group of about 10 members donated another $65 during the lunch meeting and are excited to participate as volunteers in Vision Loss Resources’ upcoming centennial celebrations in 2014.
The Minneapolis Downtown Next Generation Lions Club meets on every third Wednesday for lunch at the Oak Grill (Macy’s 12th floor) at 11:30pm. All are welcome! If interested in joining the club or would like to attend a meeting and see what it is all about, contact Dan Truniger, president, at MplsDNGLions@gmail.com.
