On the morning of Saturday, June 22, many of us were still without power, recovering from the storm the night before. However, 400 people in search of health care services and resources ventured out to attend the Centro, AHA, ACC Feria de Salud Health Fair at Centro, Inc. in Minneapolis.
Centro, Inc. is a multi-social service agency which boasts the longest-standing program for Latino seniors in Minnesota. Practically our neighbor at Chicago and Franklin Avenues, Centro, Inc. has also been a community partner of Vision Loss Resources for over five years. This health fair was a wonderful opportunity to increase our visibility within the Latino community, as many Latino members and more than a dozen community organizations that work with the Latino population participated in the event.
The Vision Loss Resources booth was staffed by volunteers Juan Fernandez, Angel Virrey Luna and Rocio Tellez Luna of Contract Production Services, Angie Lockwood of Centro, Inc. and me, Erin Collins. We talked with attendees about Vision Loss Resources, many of whom expressed interest in our services. We also took the opportunity to network and shared information about Vision Loss Resources, while learning about other organizations’ activities and services. We left the event with a long list of possible future clients who want home assessments. In addition to working down this list, we will also follow up on various ideas for projects with potential new community partners (stay tuned for more news on this…) We also enjoyed demonstrations at the event, including aerobic dance and traditional Aztec dance.
Thanks to Centro, Inc. for organizing this event, to the other community partners for sharing with us, and to our wonderful volunteers for helping us connect with so many new people!
