A panel of helpers from Land O’ Lakes joined us early in the day on Nov. 19. They checked in entries, collected information on each dish such as ingredients, secret ingredients, how the baker learned to cook, and if he or she has a favorite chef.
Rick Nelson, Star Tribune food writer and restaurant critic, joined two of the Land O’ Lakers to judge the contest. Judges did not consider how the entries looked — it was all about taste. Entries were identified not by name, but by number.
There were no categories; everyone brought their favorite baked good to Minneapolis. Thirteen people entered the contest.
The judges awarded blue ribbons to Jeff Mihelich for his cranberry pound cake, Sue Olson for her baked lasagna, and another entrant, who does not want to be named, won a blue ribbon for her Mother’s Secret (Lemon) Cake.
Some of the Vision Loss Resources staff entered baked goods as well, and the judges chose Community Center organizer Deb Clark’s recipe as the grand prize winner. Deb baked her German Apple Cake for the contest, and used Minnesota’s own Honeycrisp apples in the recipe.
